This caramel syrup is ridiculously addictive. I think it's the buttermilk that gets me? Or maybe it's that it literally tastes like I'm pouring caramel on my breakfast? Either way, I'm a fan. I prefer mine a light golden brown. Others like it darker, which gives it a richer flavor. I prefer the lighter flavor since the syrup is so rich on it's own. Let me know in the comments below how you prefer yours!
Let's Get Started!
Ingredients
Step 1:
1 1/2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter
2 tablespoons corn syrup
Step 2:
1 teaspoon baking soda
Step 3:
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions
In a saucepan, stir together the sugar, buttermilk, butter, and corn syrup. Bring to a boil, and cook for 4 minutes.
Add baking soda (will bubble up a little, make sure pot is big enough). Cook an additional 3 minutes (total of *7 minutes).
Remove from the heat, and stir in the vanilla.
*NOTE: Every stove is a little different. Times may vary for you. Best to base end time on the syrup color instead of time. You need to remove this when it is just LIGHTER than the color you want because it will continue to darken off the heat.
